 CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts scored four runs in the first inning and did not slow down, going on to defeat the Washington Wild Things 12-3 at Standard Bank Stadium Wednesday night. The win kept the Bolts 1.5 games out of the playoffs.
Washington broke out in front with two runs in the top of the first. Chris Sidick singled on the first pitch of the game and Doug Thennis doubled him in. Thennis scored on a Scott Lawson base hit.
Windy City did not take long to respond getting a single and a stolen base from their leadoff man, Brandon Anderson, who scored on a Zach Aakhus base hit. After Jason James singled and Nick Kuroczko walked, the bases were loaded with two outs for Chad Cregar, who doubled on a 1-2 pitch to score all three runners and put the ThunderBolts on top 4-2.
They added a run in the second when Tyler Keeble singled and eventually scored on an Aakhus sacrifice fly.
Another Aakhus sac fly in the fourth made it 6-2 as he scored Anderson, who had doubled. Aakhus had four RBI in the game.
Washington got one run back in the top of the fifth as they came up with back-to-back two-out hits, including an RBI single for Tim Battle.
But Windy City broke the game open in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs on just three hits. They were helped by two walks and two errors as well. With the bases loaded and no outs, Anderson walked to score the first run. Then Mike Torres hit a grounder to second and Scott Lawson’s throw home was wild, giving the Bolts another run. Lawson’s second error of the inning brought home two more and the Bolts finished their scoring for the evening with a Devin Shepherd RBI single and a wild pitch that scored James.
Both bullpens were solid after that and the only fireworks after the fifth came when the two managers got into a shouting match in the eighth inning that resulted in Windy City skipper Mike Kashirsky getting thrown out.
Matt Jernstad allowed three runs on 11 hits over six innings, but he only walked one and struck out eight, earning the win (7-9) while Jhonny Montoya allowed the first six runs for the loss (4-7).
The rubber match of the three-game set will take place at Standard Bank Stadium on Thursday night, Bud Light Thirsty Thursday at the park with $1.00 domestic draft beers. The pitching matchup will feature Windy City’s Guido Fonseca (3-11) against Washington’s Justin Edwards (5-2).
