Windy City wins second straight over Evansville, 5-3

CRESTWOOD, IL – After Matt Jernstad’s complete game on Tuesday, ThunderBolts starter Dustin Williams had a lot to live up to as he faced the Evansville Otters on Wednesday night at Standard Bank Stadium. He was up to the task as he improved to a Frontier League best 3-0 with a 5-3 victory.
The ThunderBolts hit the scoreboard early as Zach Aakhus knocked in Brandon Anderson, who had walked and stolen second base.
The Otters did not get their first hit until the fourth inning and only had three total through the first six frames.
In the bottom of the fourth, Windy City broke the game open with a three run rally. With one out in the inning, Nick Kuroczko singled, followed by a Chris Wade single, which extended his hit streak to 11 games. Kuroczko scored on an Anderson base hit. Then, after a double steal, Mike Torres drove in both Wade and Anderson to give the Bolts a four-run cushion.
In the sixth, the ThunderBolts all but put the game away with their fifth run, coming on a Ryan Basham RBI double. The hit scored Anderson, who finished the game with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Otters made a run with two runs in the seventh on a Nick Ebert single, chasing Williams from the game. Vinnie Scarduzio’s RBI double in the eighth narrowed the gap to 5-3, but Bradley blanks threw a perfect ninth to seal the victory.
Williams improved to 3-0 while Scott Kelley allowed four runs over five innings to take the loss (0-2). Blanks earned his second save.
The win also marked the 100th career regular season victory for Windy City’s manager, Mike Kashirsky. He accomplished the feat in just 156 games, and also has a 7-4 postseason record as the Bolts’ skipper.
The Windy City baseballers will be looking for a sweep of the Otters tonight at Standard Bank Stadium. Matt Costello (1-1) will take the ball for the 7:05 first pitch. The game continues six-game homestand. Thursday’s game will also feature $1.00 domestic draft beers for Bud Light Thirsty Thursday. The action will be broadcast on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com with pregame beginning at 6:45 CDT.
