Lake Erie takes game three, avoids sweep

Windy City's perfect season came to an end Saturday night as the Lake Erie Crushers scored five runs in the first three innings and held on for a win at Standard Bank Stadium.

The ThunderBolts fell to 2-1 while the Crushers picked up their first win in three games. Lake Erie scored twice in the first off of Windy City starter Matt Costello, getting an RBI double from Chase Fontaine and a sacrifice fly from Nick Mahin.

Windy City clawed back with a run in the bottom of the first. The Bolts played small ball as Josh Womack walked, moved to second on a sacrifice, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on Chase Porch's RBI single. The game was tied in the second when Michael Torres hammered a ball to deep right field, chasing Scott Houin back to the warning track. Houin caught up to the ball, but dropped it, leading to three bases for Torres. He scored on JJ Sferra's groundout.

Lake Erie pounced on Costello again in the third, scoring three times. After Patrick Norris and Fontaine singled consecutively, Andrew Davis's flyout brought in one run and Mahin's double plated two more. Lake Erie never trailed again.

Bryant Cotton pitched four strong innings of relief, keeping Windy City in the game, and in the seventh, they tightened it up with a run on a Zach Aakhus single, knocking in Brandon Anderson.

But the Crushers answered with an insurance run in the eighth, when Scott Houin's single drove in Mahin to seal the final score at 6-4. The ThunderBolts had 11 hits as a team, but stranded eight baserunners and couldn't put together the big inning they had the previous two nights. Costello took the loss (0-1) and Andy Weeks pitched five strong innings for the win (1-0. Ruben Flores retired the last four batters, including striking out the side in the ninth, for his first save.

The ThunderBolts are back in action Tuesday morning at 10:05 against the Joliet Slammers at Standard bank Stadium. Todd Privett (1-0) makes his second start for the Bolts on School Day at the ballpark. The game broadcast will begin with pregame at 9:45 on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
