Bolts lose win streak, maintain division lead

(CRESTWOOD, IL) – The ThunderBolts’ Frontier League record 20-game home winning streak came to an end Thursday night as they fell to the Oakland County Cruisers 5-4 in extra innings. Windy City sits in first place, two games ahead of Oakland County and Traverse City.

The Bolts never led and faced a hole early, as the Cruisers scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Zack Pace was hit by a pitch and Tyler Rogers immediately followed that up with a single. Joash Brodin and Jeremy Jones each hit groundballs that scored runs, and after Brodin reached on an error, another run was scored on a Kyle Maunus single.

The Bolts came clawing back in the third. After Jeremy Hamilton and Nick Kuroczko began the inning with singles, Ryan Basham’s base hit scored them both. Gilberto Mejia, who walked, came in on a Zach Aakhus sac fly.

Brodin’s fifth inning RBI single put the Cruisers back in front, but the ThunderBolts came back again in the seventh. Kuroczko singles and Aakhus later drove him in on a single, tying the game.

Both teams had close calls after that. The Cruisers had runners at second and third with no outs in the eighth, but Brandon Garner shut them out. In the ninth, the Bolts loaded the bases with two outs but JT Restko struck out to end the threat.

The Cruisers won the game in the tenth against Rod Scurry, who struck out the first two batters he faced. Maunus then walked and Dan Killian and Luis Fernandez came up with back-to-back singles, putting Oakland County up by one. In the bottom of the tenth, Michael Torres reached third base with one out but P.J. Zocchi struck out Brandon Anderson and got Gilberto Mejia to ground out to first to end the game. It was Zocchi’s 26th save, tying the Frontier League record set in 2007 by Windy City’s Matt Petty.

The Bolts wrap up their home schedule with three games against the Washington Wild Things starting Friday night. Sean Toler (7-0) gets the start against Washington’s Jeff Sonnenberg (5-7). It is $1 beer night at Standard Bank Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Game audio can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
