Bolts Sweep Kings in Marathon Doubleheader

It took almost eight hours this time, but once again, ThunderBolts fans went home happy after a doubleheader sweep of the Kalamazoo Kings Saturday night, 3-2 and 6-5.
In game one, the Kings went ahead 2-1 with runs in the first and second innings, and the score remained that way for most of the game. ThunderBolts starter Ryan Quigley worked his way out of several jams in his 5+ innings of work, most notably in the second inning when Kalamazoo loaded the bases with nobody out. He struck out the next two hitters and got a groundout to avoid further damage.
Brandon Parillo was solid for Kalamazoo in his five innings, allowing one run on five hits. The ThunderBolts came back off the bullpen in the seventh, scoring a run when Donnie Ecker reached on a walk. He was replaced by Mike Torres who stole a base and eventually scored on a wild pitch. After Nick Hall pitched a scoreless eighth, the ThunderBolts won it on another wild pitch. Mike Sullivan singled, moved to third on a JT Restko single, and after he came up limping, pinch runner Tim Alberts scored the winning run.
In game two, both starting pitchers were chased from the game in the third inning  with Kalamazoo going on top early 4-1. Windy City chipped away at the lead, and in the sixth inning, they tied it up at five on a Gilberto Mejia RBI single. From there it was a stalemate as both bullpens were fantastic. Ryan Rowe, making his professional debut, earned the win going two innings, allowing just one hit in extras.
Both teams had a few chances in extra innings, but it was not until the eleventh inning that the ThunderBolts finally broke through. Gilberto Mejia walked followed by a Kent Gerst hit by pitch. After Ryne White walked to load the bases, the Kings made a pitching change, but it didn’t work as Restko knocked the game winning single through the left side sending Bolts fans home happy with a 6-5 win.
Windy City next takes the field on Tuesday morning with an 11:05 start against the Traverse City Beach Bums. It is a School Day at the ballpark and the game can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm.
