Miners take game two

Brad Miller hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning lifting the Southern Illinois Miners to a 4-3 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts.

The ThunderBolts pounced in the first inning as Gilberto Mejia led off with a walk and stole second. Guillermo Martinez came up and ripped a double down the first base line to score Mejia for a 1-0 Windy City lead. In the bottom of the first, an RBI double from Jereme Milons scored Kevin Koski with two outs to tie the game at 1-1.

The game would remain deadlocked at 1-1 into the bottom of the seventh as both starting pitchers found their rhythm. In the seventh, with Travon Jackson on second and two outs, Justin Randall hit a soft liner that fell beyond the outstretched glove of Guillermo Martinez for an RBI single and a 2-1 Miners lead. Brad Miller came up next and launched a two-run homer over the leftfield fence for a 4-1 Southern Illinois advantage.

Windy City would not give up however, as Gilberto Mejia led off the eighth inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Guillermo Martinez followed with a walk. Both runners would move up on a passed ball. A Tyler Farrar groundout scored Mejia to make it 4-2. Bryan Cook came up and hit an infield single to bring home Martinez and cut the Miners lead to 4-3.

Jake McMurran (2-1) picked up the win in relief for the Miners going 2.1 strong innings. Mike Phelps pitched the final 1.2 innings for his fifth save of the year. Stephen Flake (0-2) pitched well over seven innings, striking out seven.
