Bolts comeback falls short, drop series finale to Evansville

EVANSVILLE, IN- The Windy City ThunderBolts fell to the Evansville Otters Thursday evening 9-4 at Bosse Field.

The Otters (12-6) struck early and often for the series win. Evansville, with the first run of the game, has now scored first in 16 consecutive games. The Otters collected five extra base hits off Windy City starter Kenny Mathews (0-3) through 3.2 innings of work. Mathews allowed six earned runs on ten hits while striking out four.

Zachary Smith (3-0) received the win. Smith pitched five innings allowing six hits and three runs, and walked three batters while striking out two on the evening. 

 

The ThunderBolts (8-11) responded in the top of the fifth inning. Bren Spillane drove in Junior Martina with an RBI double but it was too little too late for the Bolts. Martina went 3-5 on the evening with two runs batted in. The ThunderBolts also received multi-hit performances from Jonathan Wait (2-4) and Micah Yonaimne (2-4).

 

ThunderBolts’ Pitcher Austin Marozas made his season debut, tossing 1.2 innings allowing one run from a lead-off walk in the bottom of the sixth inning that was let in by Bolts’ southpaw Adrien Reese.

 

Noah Myers added a two-run homer for additional insurance for Evansville in the bottom of the eighth, his second homer of the series and went a whopping 8-15 with two homers and seven runs batted in over the three games.

 

The Bolts are back in action at Ozinga Field for a pair of home games Friday and Saturday evening against the Gateway Grizzlies. The ThunderBolts will send Henry Omana (4-0, 1.00 ERA) vs. (Joey Gonzalez 2-1, 5.79). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 CT for the series opener. It's Fright Night at Ozinga Field, featuring a special appearance from TV's Svengoolie. The game will be followed by a fireworks show. The broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
