Spillane homers twice more as Bolts sweep Miners

BOX SCORE

CRESTWOOD, IL – Bren Spillane hit two home runs for the second straight day to help guide the ThunderBolts to a 6-3 victory over the Sussex County Miners at Ozinga Field Thursday afternoon.

The Bolts (6-6) fell behind in the top of the first inning before Spillane’s first big blast. Daryl Myers singled in front of the home run, making it a 2-1 Windy City lead.

Spillane struck again in the fifth inning with his fourth home run in two days, a solo shot that made the score 3-1.

Sussex County (7-6), looking to avoid the sweep had one more run in them, tying the game in the top of the sixth. With two outs, three straight batters reached to load the bases. Mikey Reynolds came up with a two-run single that evened the score at three.

The ThunderBolts got those runs right back. In the bottom of the inning, Brynn Martinez was hit by a pitch, advanced to second and stole third. Then, a straight steal of home proved to be the game-winner.

An RBI double for Manny Garcia and a Payton Robertson solo homer provided some late insurance as the Bolts went on to win their third straight game.

Garrett Christman pitched into the sixth and received no decision. Sebastian Selway (1-1) blew the save but picked up his first professional win. Conner Dans (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs for Sussex County.

After sweeping the Miners, the ThunderBolts continue their six-game home stand on Friday with the opener against the New York Boulders. Bryan Ketchie gets the start for the Bolts on First Responders and Healthcare Workers Appreciation Night at Ozinga Field. The game will be followed by a postgame fireworks show. First pitch is set for 7:05 and the game broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com
