ThunderBolts end home stand with blowout loss

BOX SCORE

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts fell behind the Ottawa Titans 5-0 in the first two innings Thursday morning and never recovered on their way to a 13-3 loss at Ozinga Field to conclude a season-opening seven-game home stand.

Ottawa (4-2) came out swinging, collecting three hits in the first inning and six more in the second. Rodrigo Orozco hit a run-scoring double and A.J. Wright and Brendon Dadson both picked up RBI base hits to help their team to the early lead.

Kenny Mathews, the Windy City starter, settled in over the next two innings but the Titans got to him again in the fifth as Orozco doubled in two more. The lead ballooned to 13-0 in a six-run sixth. Former ThunderBolt Jason Dicochea’s three-run double was the big hit of the rally.

The ThunderBolts offense showed some life late as Bren Spillane got them on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Jace Mercer singled home two more to cut it to 13-3 in the seventh. The ThunderBolts (3-4) went on to load the bases with one out but didn’t score again and didn’t threaten over the final two innings.

Mathews (0-1) allowed seven runs (five earned) over 4.1 innings in taking the loss. Tyler Jandron (2-0) pitched well in the win for Ottawa. He allowed just an unearned run over six innings.

Before returning home for three morning games next week, the ThunderBolts will make their first-ever trip to Tri-City to take on the ValleyCats. Garrett Christman (0-0, 1.59), who pitched well in his first start of the year, gets his second in game of the series. First pitch from Bruno Stadium in Troy, New York is scheduled for 6:00 CDT.
