ThunderBolts lose late lead in ten-inning defeat

CRESTWOOD, IL – Equipe Quebec scored two runs in the ninth inning and four more in the tenth to beat the ThunderBolts 8-4 at Ozinga Field Sunday afternoon.

The ThunderBolts (32-39) grasped an early lead in the bottom of the third inning when Anthony Rios hit a two-out double. Payton Robertson knocked him in with an RBI single.

The score remained 1-0 into the seventh. Garrett Christman, making his ThunderBolts debut, pitched around some early trouble and made it through six with the shutout intact. Then, with two outs, Ruben Castro walked and Gift Ngoepe doubled him in to tie the score. Ngoepe later scored on an error to give Quebec their first lead.

The ThunderBolts were quick to respond. In the bottom of the inning, Jace Mercer doubled and Zac Taylor walked. Back-to-back singles for Donivan Williams and Rios plated three runs to put the Bolts up 4-2.

They made it into the ninth with that score but Quebec started the inning with back-to-back infield singles. Neil Abbatiello retired the next two batters and was one out away from locking up the win but L.P. Pelletier blooped a single to left field to bring home two runs and tie the score.

In the tenth, Jeffry Parra led off with an RBI double, giving Quebec the winning run. They tacked on three more on RBI hits from Jonathan Lacroix and Jesse Hodges to put the game away. Evan Rutckyj set the ThunderBolts down in order in the bottom of the inning.

Rutckyj (2-1) pitched two innings total for the win and Ryan Hare (1-1) took the loss.

The ThunderBolts embark on a season-long nine-game road trip beginning on Tuesday, when they visit the Gateway Grizzlies. Miguel Ausua (6-3, 4.22) gets the game one call on the mound for the Bolts. First pitch from GCS Credit Union Ballpark is set for 6:45 and Links to the audio and video broadcasts can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
