Bolts and Freedom trade blowouts in doubleheader split

FLORENCE, KY – The ThunderBolts’ bats broke out in game two of a doubleheader Wednesday night in Florence as they jumped out to an 11-0 lead on their way to an 11-4 win over the Florence Freedom. Florence took the opener 8-2.

The Freedom (13-9) started game one with an RBI double from Luis Pintor in the first inning and an RBI single from Isaac Benard in the second to make it 2-0.

Tyler Thornton, who had only allowed one run in his first four starts, couldn’t get out of the third as Florence pulled away with five hits, including a two-run single from Connor Crane that broke the game open.

After a lengthy rain delay, the ThunderBolts (11-12) turned their offense up, collecting six hits over the final three innings but their only runs came on a Tyler Alamo double in the sixth.

Tyler Gibson (3-1) went the distance for the win and Thornton (2-1) took the loss.

Randy Perez hit a two-run homer in the second inning of game two, the first of his career, to give the ThunderBolts a 2-0 lead. Tyler Straub and Dash Winningham followed up with RBI singles to make it 5-0.

The Bolts scored two runs apiece in the next three innings with a two-run home run for Patrick Mathis, a Winningham RBI double and Brynn Martinez RBI hit highlighting the action. Seven different ThunderBolts finished the game with multiple hits.

Austin Jones did not allow a hit over his first four innings but saw his shutout go away in the fifth as Connor Crane hit an RBI single and Isaac Benard followed with a three-run homer.

Jones (1-1) went five innings for the win. Alex McCune (0-1) allowed seven runs in three innings for the loss.

The series wraps up on Thursday night as Chris Washington (0-3, 3.20) gets the start for the Bolts against Florence’s Scott Sebald (1-0, 4.10). First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 CDT and the radio broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
