Bolts drop series with 8-1 loss

Things 8 Bolts 1

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Washington Wild Things scored three runs in the first inning and held the ThunderBolts bats back in an 8-1 final at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Pollock started the scoring with a two-out RBI double in the first and Reydel Medina followed with a home run that made the score 3-0.

The ThunderBolts (8-11) did not threaten offensively in the early innings and did not have a hit until a Tyler Straub bunt single in the fourth inning. They had just one runner reach second over the first five frames.

Washington (12-9) added to their lead with three more in the sixth. After Roman Collins singled, Medina hit his second home run of the game to make the score 5-0. Hector Roa made it back-to-back homers with his shot over the right field wall.

Straub walked with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and stole second base, putting him in scoring position in front of Larry Balkwill, who doubled in the ThunderBolts’ only run.

The Bolts threatened again in the seventh, putting runners at second and third with one out but couldn’t score, and the Wild Things put the game away the following inning when they got RBI hits from Pollock and Mike Hill, putting it out of each at 8-1.

Chase Cunningham (1-2) picked up his sixth career win in eight starts against the ThunderBolts, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings. Zac Westcott (0-4) allowed all three homers and six runs overall in five innings to take the loss.

The ThunderBolts begin a season-long nine-game road trip on Tuesday with the first of three games against the Schaumburg Boomers. Paddy Ledet (2-0, 2.19) makes the game one start against Schaumburg’s Steven Ridings (1-2, 3.17). First pitch from Boomers Stadium is slated for 6:30 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
