ThunderBolts fall to Joliet 6-2

Slammers 6 Bolts 2

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Joliet Slammers scored three runs in the sixth inning to break a tie game on their way to defeating the Windy City ThunderBolts 6-2 at Standard Bank Stadium Thursday night.

Joliet (21-15) jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning. Boo Vazquez reached on a two-out infield single and Carter Bell knocked him in with a double.

The ThunderBolts (21-14) answered in the third. John Williams doubled and Tim Zier singled him home to make it 1-1.

After allowing the first inning run, Jake Fisher retired 13 straight batters until Phil Bates led off the sixth with an infield hit. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Alfredo Rodriguez. Boo Vazquez followed with a base hit to put two men on. Fisher came up with a big strikeout of Bell for the second out of the inning, but back-to-back singles from Marc Flores and Jake Gronsky scored two more runs and chased Fisher from the game.

Coco Johnson’s solo homer in the eighth brought the Bolts to 4-2 but that was as close as they would get as Joliet added two more runs in the ninth on a two-run Joe Staley double.

Liam O’Sullivan (4-0) was excellent, pitching eight innings for the win. He allowed seven hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Fisher (4-1) struck out seven with no walks, but took his first loss of the year.

After splitting their two-game series with Joliet, the ThunderBolts begin a four-gamer with the Traverse City Beach Bums on Friday. Chicago Dueling Pianos will be out to perform postgame as part of JULIE Inc.’s Late Night Fridays. It is also Budweiser Fill ‘R Up Friday with drink deals all night. Ryan Strombom (2-3, 5.52) will start for Windy City against Traverse City’s Jacob Lanning (2-4, 4.89). First pitch from Standard Bank Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
