Bolts take series with 5-3 win

Bolts 5 Slammers 3

JOLIET, IL – Michael Torres had three hits and Kyle Robinson hit his ninth home run of the year as the ThunderBolts won back-to-back games for the first time since late-May, defeating the Joliet Slammers 5-3 at Silver Cross Field Sunday afternoon.

The ThunderBolts scored in the first inning for the third straight day when Evan Button led off with a walk and Torres bunted his way to first base in front of Robinson, who hit his ninth home run of the year to make the score 3-0.

The Slammers responded immediately with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jake Gronsky singled and Russ Moldenhauer walked and both men scored on Adam Giacalone’s base hit. Grant DeBruin, who had singled, tied the score when he scored on Seth Granger’s groundout.

Neither side would score again until the fifth. Button led off with a double and advanced to third on Torres’s second bunt single. Robinson’s sacrifice fly made it 4-3 and, after a Ryan Soares single, Torres scored on an error on a mishandled bunt.

The Slammers had opportunities later in the game but couldn’t capitalize. Their best chance came in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Travis Tingle struck out Jose Garcia to get out of the jam.

In the ninth, Joliet threatened again, putting two men on base, but Danny Carela struck out Adam Giacalone to end the game, Carela’s third strikeout of the inning.

Tingle (5-4) threw six innings, allowing three runs for the win and Colin Gotzon (0-1) allowed five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings for the loss. Carela picked up his fifth save.

The ThunderBolts will return home for the first time since July 3 to take on the Evansville Otters on Monday. Josh Spence (0-3, 6.13) will get the start for the Bolts against Evansville’s Trevor Walch (2-0, 2.40). Game one of the three game series begins at 7:05 and the game broadcast can be heard on meridix.com.
