FLORENCE, KY – Casey Henn threw seven shutout innings and the ThunderBolts stranded six men in scoring position as the Florence Freedom shut out the Bolts 4-0 at UC Health Stadium Wednesday night.
It was a scoreless pitcher’s duel into the bottom of the third when the Freedom scored first. Cole Miles led off with an infield single and made his way to third base with one out. Joe Staley popped out to shortstop, but when Mike Torres’s throw got away from catcher Doug Joyce, Miles came in to score.
The ThunderBolts had a chance to tie the score in the top of the fifth. Max White singled and stood at second base with two outs when Torres picked up a hit to right field. White tried to score but Nick Stein’s throw to the plate caught him to end the inning.
Florence then extended their lead with a two-run fifth inning. Michael Wilson singled and Miles walked before Sam Eberle knocked them both in on a base hit.
In the sixth, a Caleb Bryson single and Miles sacrifice fly made the score 4-0.
The ThunderBolts had one more strong scoring chance. After Henn departed in the eighth, the Bolts loaded the bases with no outs against Daniel DeSimone. Pete Levitt, though, came out of the pen and got Kyle Robinson to fly out and Evan Button to ground into a double play to preserve the shutout.
Henn (2-1) struck out eight and walked one in earning the win. Jake Fisher (1-4) allowed four runs in 5.2 innings to take the loss. Levitt picked up his first save.
The series will conclude with game two on Thursday night. Eli Anderson (0-1, 4.50) will make his second start for the ThunderBolts against Peter Gehle (0-1, 3.08) for the Freedom. First pitch from UC Health Stadium is scheduled for 5:35 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
