ThunderBolts triumph 2-1

Bolts 2 Greys 1

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts scored the last two runs in the last two innings Wednesday night, triumphing in a classic pitchers’ duel, 2-1 over the Frontier Greys.

Both Daniel Cropper of the ThunderBolts and Joe Zeller of the Greys were on their games early. Zeller allowed just two singles in the first six innings and at one point, retired 15 out of 16 ThunderBolt hitters. The only man to reach during that stretch was Zach Aakhus on a dropped third strike.

Cropper, meanwhile, was perfect through five, getting a little help from Andrew Brauer, who threw out JJ Muse at first base on a liner to right field.

The Greys had a chance to score in the sixth. With Nick DelGuidice at first and one out, Brock McCallister singled to right. DelGuidice made it to third easily but went too far around the bag and got caught in a rundown between third and home for the second out. The Greys would not score in the inning.

The Greys finally broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning. With two outs Blake Bergeron and Mark Micowski came up with back-to-back hits. Bergeron doubled and Micowski singled him in.

The Bolts were quick to respond as Chad Cregar led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Kyle Robinson sacrifice fly, tying the score.

In the eighth, Jayce Ray led off with a walk. He was bunted to second and moved to third on a groundout. Mike Torres then gave the Bolts their first lead of the night, doubling home Ray to make it a 2-1 game.

Markus Solbach pitched a perfect eighth for the win and Michael Click locked down his 16th save with a scoreless ninth. Joe Zeller was the tough-luck loser. He went a career-long 7.2 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Daniel Cropper pitched seven one-run innings for the Bolts, striking out a career-high six.

The ThunderBolts and Greys will resume their series Thursday night at Standard Bank Stadium. Game two will feature Brian Oliver (4-6, 4.44) pitching for the Bolts against Casey Delgado (1-4, 3.51). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on wcthunderbolts.com.
