Bolts drop game one against Washington

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Washington Wild Things scored five runs in the seventh inning Friday night to run away from the ThunderBolts to an eventual 7-4 victory at Standard Bank Stadium.
The Wild Things scored in the first inning when leadoff man Scott Lawson walked and eventually came around to score on a Luis Rivera fielder’s choice.
The Bolts answered an inning later when Chad Cregar sent his sixth homer of the year out to right, tying the game.
Washington very quickly regained the lead, though, as Doug Thennis doubled to begin the third inning. After a Rivera single, Tim Battle’s sacrifice fly made it 2-1.
That score remained all the way into the seventh inning as both Bryant Cotton of Windy City and Washington’s Gary Lee settled in and pitched effectively. Cotton, though, plagued by a high pitch count, departed with a man on first in the top of the seventh inning. Matt Costello came in and the Wild Thing offense went to work. Thennis singled and Rivera doubled home two runs. After Eric Stephens reached on an error, Battle doubled home two more runs. He scored on a Kevyn Feiner groundout, concluding the inning with a 7-1 lead.
The Bolts showed some offensive life in the bottom of the seventh with Larry Pempek starting off with a double. With one out, Brandon Anderson singled, and when he stole second, an errant throw from second baseman Drew Rossi toward third base scored both Pempek and Anderson.
Dustin Williams came out of the ThunderBolts bullpen and struck out the side in the eighth, giving him 151 for the season and Windy City gave it one more offensive shot in the ninth. With two outs, Anderson tripled to deep center, and when the relay throw was mishandled, he scored, making the final score 7-4.
Lee pitched a complete game for Washington, earning the win (4-6) while Cotton took the loss (6-10).
Game two between Windy City and Washington will take place on Saturday night at 7:05 at Standard Bank Stadium. Guido Fonseca (3-11) will start for the Bolts against Justin Hall (9-7). Fireworks will follow the contest. Anyone who can’t make it can tune in to the audio broadcast on Sportsjuice.com.
