Windy City drops third straight in Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – For the second straight night, the ThunderBolts were shut down by Traverse City’s starting pitcher and the Beach Bums defeated Windy City 3-1 at Wuerfel Park Sunday night.
The ThunderBolts loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning, but David Deminsky struck out Chad Cregar to get out of the jam. He went on to retire seven straight hitters.
In the bottom of the second, the Beach Bums scored the game’s first run. Jose Vargas led off with an infield single and took second on Matt Jernstad’s throwing error. Matt Brown singled to score the run, but Brown was left at third base to end the inning.
They added a run in the third when, with one out, Greg Burns tripled and Chase Burch doubled him in.
The Bolts threatened again when Devin Shepherd tripled with one out in the fourth, but the ThunderBolts could not get him in and the score remained 2-0.
The Beach Bums made it 3-0 in the fifth. Burns led off with a bunt single and, after two quick outs, he scored on a Vargas double.
The ThunderBolts broke a 13-inning scoreless streak in the eighth. Mike Torres led off the inning with a single, then stole second base. Zach Aakhus blooped a hit out to right field to score Torres and put the Bolts on the board. Aakhus made it to third base with only one out, but reliever Scott Reid got out of any further trouble and held the score at 3-1.
David Deminsky threw seven shutout innings to earn the victory (5-3) and Matt Jernstad allowed just three runs over seven innings but took the loss (7-10). Scott Mueller earned his 20th save.
The Bolts take Monday off and return to action on Tuesday evening at Silver Cross Field to take on the first-place Joliet Slammers. Joliet will send Andrew Moss (5-5) to the mound. The ThunderBolts have not yet named a starter. Tuesday’s game begins at &:05 and can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
