ThunderBolts drop second straight to Schaumburg

BOX SCORE

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Schaumburg Boomers scored five unanswered runs to erase an early ThunderBolts lead and capture game two of the series 5-1 at Ozinga Field Saturday night.

The Bolts (34-48) took advantage of Schaumburg starter Antonio Frias’s control problems early. Frias walked the bases loaded but pitched out of the jam. In the second inning, he walked the leadoff batter but couldn’t escape unscathed. Dan Robinson stole second base and scored on a Paul Coumoulos single.

Garrett Christman mowed down the Schaumburg batting order through the first five innings, facing just one batter over the minimum but the Boomers (49-33) got to him in the sixth. They put their first two runners on thanks to a hit and an error. The second error of the inning allowed two runs to score and put Schaumburg on top for good. Gaige Howard’s RBI double made it 3-1.

The Boomers posted two more runs the next inning on a Will Prater RBI single and a Travis Holt sacrifice fly.

After their early run, the ThunderBolts struggled on offense. They finished the game with four hits, all singles, and didn’t put another man past second base.

Frias (3-1) allowed only one run (zero earned) on two hits over six innings. He walked five but struck out 13. Christman (7-4) allowed five runs (four earned) in 6.1 innings with two strikeouts and a walk and took the loss.

The ThunderBolts will try to stave off the sweep in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. It’s JULIE Family Sunday at Ozinga Field. There will be a live in-game show from Animals for Awareness and after the game, fans can get autographs from the ThunderBolts and play catch on the field. Javier Reynoso (3-1, 5.49) starts for the Bolts against Schaumburg’s Jackson Hickert (5-4, 4.50). First pitch is slated for 1:05 and the broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
