ThunderBolts homer three times in win

CRESTWOOD, IL – Bren Spillane homered twice to back Kenny Mathews’s best performance of the year as the ThunderBolts won their second straight over the Sussex County Miners, 8-6 at Ozinga Field Wednesday afternoon.

Sussex County (7-5) scored the first run of the game on a solo home run for Cito Culver in the top of the second inning but that was their only lead of the game.

The score was tied in the bottom of the frame when Dan Robinson walked and Nikola Vasic tripled him home. Bren Spillane then put Windy City (5-6) ahead for good with his first homer of the day, a solo shot to lead off the fourth. Two batters later, Manny Garcia hit one over the wall to make it 3-1. The ThunderBolts ended up sending nine batters to the plate in the fourth. Jake Boone hit an RBI groundout, Jace Mercer scored one on a single and by the end of the inning, it was a 6-1 lead.

Mercer added to his RBI total with a double in the sixth and Spillane went deep again in the seventh to make the lead 8-1.

Sussex County made it close in the late innings. After scoring one in the eighth, they loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth. Martin Figueroa walked to score a run and Mikey Reynolds doubled home two more. An error made the score 8-6 but Justin Miller got Carson McCurdy to line out, securing his first save of the season.

Mathews (1-1) allowed only one run on five hits while striking out seven for the win. James Mulry (1-2) gave up six runs in four innings for the loss.

The ThunderBolts have clinched their first series win of the year and can pick up their first sweep with a win in the series finale on Thursday afternoon. Garrett Christman (0-0, 2.13) makes the start for Windy City against Sussex County’s Conner Dand (1-0, 2.16).
