ThunderBolts shut out in opener at Evansville

Otters 7 Bolts 0

EVANSVILLE, IN – The Evansville Otters scored in each of the first four innings and the ThunderBolts left 11 men on base but failed to score in a 7-0 loss to open a three game series at Bosse Field Friday night.

Brynn Martinez hit his league leading sixth triple of the year in the top of the first inning but was stranded at third base. That was the start of a trend for the ThunderBolts (28-36), who went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the game.

Evansville (36-27) wasted no time in taking the lead. Keith Grieshaber walked and scored on a Ryan Long base hit in the first and, in the second inning, Jack Meggs was hit by a pitch and came home on a David Cronin single.

The Otters pulled away over the next two frames when they hit three solo home runs. Long hit his league best 12th of the year and Rob Calabrese and Cronin also went deep.

In the sixth inning, Brett Coffel put in a bid to break the shutout with a deep fly to left-center field, but he was robbed by a diving Grieshaber to keep the shutout in tact.

The last two runs of the game were tacked on in the seventh inning. Carlos Castro hit an RBI double and Meggs brought home the final run on a groundout.

Tyler Vail tossed six scoreless innings, striking out ten for the win. The ThunderBolts struck out a season-high 16 times overall, including six times against Brandyn Sittinger, who picked up the save with three innings of relief work.

Kenny Mathews (3-7) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over six innings.

The series continues on Saturday evening as Cole Bellair (2-3, 4.22) takes the mound for the ThunderBolts against Evansville’s Tyler Beardsley (5-3, 2.83). Saturday’s game is a 6:35 start time at Bosse Field and the radio broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
