Funk's homer lifts ThunderBolts over Wild Things

Bolts 3 Things 2

WASHINGTON, PA – Christian Funk’s first professional home run was a two-run shot in the ninth inning that broke a 1-1 tie and delivered a 3-2 win to the ThunderBolts over the Washington Wild Things at Wild Things Park Thursday night.

Randy Perez put the first run on the board for Windy City (25-31) in the second inning. He followed a Funk walk with a two-out double to make the score 1-0.

Tyler Thornton made that score hold over the next three innings but the Wild Things (24-33) tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. They loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a hit batter. That brought Hector Roa up with two outs and Roa reached on an infield single that brought home the tying run.

Washington had multiple chances to break the tie but they left the bases loaded in the fifth and eighth innings and stranded two in the seventh. Overall, they left 12 men on base.

Nick Wegmann pitched eight strong innings for Washington but the Bolts got to the bullpen in the top of the ninth. Chase Cockrell drew a leadoff walk in front of Funk, who hit a towering blast to rightfield that reclaimed the lead for the ThunderBolts, 3-1.

Roa went deep in the bottom of the ninth for Washington but the solo shot was not enough to erase the two-run deficit.

Thornton allowed just the one run in 6.2 innings for the ThunderBolts and Colby Blueberg (2-1) got the final four outs for the win.

Jesus Balaguer (2-3) pitched the ninth and took the loss for Washington.

The road trip continues on Friday when the ThunderBolts head back to the Chicagoland area to play the Schaumburg Boomers. Matt Miller (2-1, 3.67) starts for Schaumburg. The ThunderBolts haven’t yet named their starter. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:30 CDT and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
