ThunderBolts depart Florence with series win

Bolts 3 Freedom 2

FLORENCE, KY – Tyler Alamo broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning as the ThunderBolts defeated the Florence Freedom 3-2 at UC Health Stadium Thursday night.

Connor Crane gave the Freedom (13-10) the first lead of the night when he hit a solo home run in the third inning. That was the only run allowed by Chris Washington, though, in his six innings of work.

The Bolts (12-12) tied it up in the fourth. Tyler Straub singled and moved to third on a Tyler Alamo double before Shane Carrier’s sacrifice fly gave the ThunderBolts their first run. They loaded the bases with no outs the next inning but Scott Sebald worked out of the jam to keep the game tied.

It didn’t remain that way for long. Randy Perez hit his second homer in as many nights in the sixth to give the ThunderBolts their first lead at 2-1.

The Freedom came back in the seventh as Ryan Rinsky walked and Isaac Benard came up with a two-out RBI single. It was the fifth blown save for a ThunderBolts reliever, but for the first time, they were able to overcome it and win the game.

Straub doubled in the eighth in front of Alamo, who doubled him home to put the Bolts back on top and Colby Blueberg and Dylan Prohoroff each threw a scoreless inning to wrap up the victory.

Blake Hickman (2-1) blew the save but picked up the win and Brian McKenna (0-1) allowed a run in one inning for the loss. Prohoroff picked up his sixth save.

The ThunderBolts return home to celebrate Toy Story Night at Ozinga Field on Friday night. The Gateway Grizzlies come to town to start a three-game series as Kenny Mathews (2-2, 3.66) takes the mound for the Bolts against Gateway’s Dominic Topoozian (2-0, 3.27). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the radio broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
