ThunderBolts shut down Crushers 5-0

Bolts 5 Crushers 0

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts responded to being shutout in the opener by holding the Crushers scoreless in a 5-0 win in game two of a three-game set at Standard Bank Stadium Wednesday night.

Windy City (32-43) used three different pitchers in their seventh shutout victory of the year with most of the credit going to starter Braulio Torres-Perez, who allowed six hits and struck out nine in the winning effort.

The Bolts’ offense got going in the second when Tyler Straub reached on a leadoff double. After advancing to third on a single by Blair Beck, Crushers’ starter Oriel Caicedo attempted to pick off Beck at first base and Straub managed to steal home to put his team up 1-0.

One batter later, Derek Bangert doubled home Beck, who scored all the way from first to increase the Windy City lead to 2-0.

The ThunderBolts doubled their lead in the fourth thanks to one swing from Beck, who launched his 10thhome run of the year. In the same inning, Omar Obregon extended his hitting streak to 25 games and on-base streak to 40, making it the longest hitting streak in the Frontier League since Jason James set the record at 40 in 2009 and tying the franchise hit streak record.

Obregon later tripled home Joe Becht in the sixth inning to make it 5-0, but was caught trying to score after the relay throw trickled away from the Lake Erie shortstop.

Jack Anderson and Joel Toribio combined to allow two baserunners over two frames of scoreless relief, while Torres-Perez (2-3) earned the win. Oriel Caicedo took the loss (1-3) after 4.2 innings.

ThunderBolts and Crushers match up for a rubber game at Standard Bank Stadium with Eddie Avila (2-5, 5.47) getting the start for Windy City against Lake Erie’s Micah Beyer (1-1, 2.00).

It is White Castle Wrestling Thursday at the ballpark, as $1.50 domestics will be served and a one hour wrestling show will follow the game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
