ThunderBolts fall on 12th-inning walk

Rascals 6 Bolts 5

O’FALLON, MO – Braxton Martinez walked with the bases loaded in the 12th inning as the River City Rascals beat the ThunderBolts 6-5 at Carshield Field Wednesday night.

The ThunderBolts (28-41) scored first as Tim Zier singled with two outs in the third inning. He stole second and was brought home by an Axel Johnson single.

The Rascals (36-33) tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring groundout, but the Bolts responded with four in the fourth. With two on, Derek Bangert ripped an RBI single that made the score 2-1. Omar Obregon picked up an RBI base hit as well, giving him a 19-game hit streak. Zier came up next with a two-run single.

Back-to-back doubles, with Martinez picking up the RBI, put the Rascals back on the board in the fourth and a Zach Lavy RBI double followed by a Kevin Suarez two-run homer tied it at five in the fifth.

Neither team scored over the next several innings and the game went into the 11th with the tiebreaker rule kicking in. Joe Becht started the 11th at second base and when Cody Mincey made an errant throw on an Obregon bunt, Becht tried to score but was thrown out at the plate. Obregon made it to third with one out but was stranded there.

In the bottom of the inning, the Rascals put a man on third with one out but Dan Hlad struck out back-to-back hitters.

River City started the bottom of the 12th with a sacrifice bunt, moving the winning run to third with one out. The Bolts issued two intentional walks to load the bases before Martinez took four straight out of the zone to end the game.

Mincey (4-1) pitched three innings of relief for the win and Hlad (1-1) took the loss despite not allowing a hit in 1.1 innings.

The series wraps up on Thursday with Braulio Torres-Perez (1-2, 4.19) on the mound for the ThunderBolts. The Rascals counter with Jonny Ortiz (4-1, 3.97). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
