ThunderBolts weather storm, beat Evansville

Bolts 7 Otters 2

EVANSVILLE, IN – The ThunderBolts scored five runs over the final two innings to break a tie with the Evansville Otters and win 7-2 at Bosse Field Friday night.

The Bolts (22-35) got on the board for the first time in the third inning. With two outs, they racked up three straight hits. Omar Obregon and Tim Zier singled before Axel Johnson hit a two-run double.

The Otters (28-29) got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Long walked and moved to third on a Travis Harrison single. Jeff Gardner’s groundout brought home Long.

Toby Thomas led off the next inning with a walk for Evansville. A walk and a bunt moved him to third with one out and Hunter Cullen’s sacrifice fly tied the score.

The score remained tied through the seventh inning, after which lightning surrounded the park and forced an hour and 20-minute delay.

The Bolts came out of the delay hot. Larry Balkwill hit a solo homer in the eighth to reclaim the lead. Then, in the ninth inning, they sent eight men to the plate and scored four insurance runs. Terrance Robertson started the rally with a double. Zier and Blair Beck each hit RBI singles and Tyler Straub finished it off with a two-run triple.

Jake Welch allowed two runs on four hits over 6.2 innings but did not factor in the decision as Patrick Ledet (4-6) came out of the bullpen and recorded the final out of the seventh inning. Tyler Beardlsey (2-5) allowed the Balkwill homer for the loss and Drew Peden picked up the save, throwing two shutout frames.

The ThunderBolts and Otters continue their series at Bosse Field on Saturday night. Connor Bach (2-1, 4.00) gets the game two start for the Bolts. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
