ThunderBolts wallop Beach Bums

Bolts 12 Bums 2

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The ThunderBolts scored a season-high 12 runs on 11 hits and 12 walks as they coasted to a 12-2 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park Saturday night.

The Bolts (10-14) got off to a hot start as the first three batters reached base. Tyler Straub started the scoring with an RBI base hit. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Andrew Dundon scored on a wild pitch and after they were loaded again, Blair Beck was hit by a pitch to force in another run.

The Beach Bums (10-15) got on the board in the fourth inning with a Will Kengor double. He moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout to cut the Bolts’ lead to two.

They extended it quickly, though, scoring six in the fifth. Beck picked up his second RBI of the night on a double and Tim Zier and Dundon each hit RBI singles. After a walk loaded the bases, Larry Balkwill broke the game open with a three-run double to put the ThunderBolts ahead 9-1.

The Beach Bums put one more run on the board on a Donald Glover RBI single but the ThunderBolts put up another three spot in the eighth, when two walks preceded Beck, who homered for the second time this year. Beck finished with five RBIs.

Zac Westcott (1-4) pitched well, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings and earned his first win of the year. Adam Cornwell (0-4) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits and six walks over 4.2 innings.

The rubber match between the Beach Bums and ThunderBolts is set for Sunday evening. The Bolts will start Paddy Ledet (2-1, 2.93) against the Beach Bums’ Reinaldo Lopez (0-2, 8.39). First pitch from Wuerfel Park is scheduled for 4:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
