Big first inning leads to Bolts' third straight loss

Slammers 10 Bolts 2

JOLIET, IL – The Joliet Slammers scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the ThunderBolts for the second straight night, 10-2 at Slammers Stadium Saturday night.

TJ Santiago made his professional debut on the mound for the Bolts (20-19) and struggled early on as the first six batters reached base for the Slammers (17-20). The key hit was Juan Silva’s three-run homer. They also got RBI singles from Spencer Navin and Chaz Meadows and Travis Bolin hit a sacrifice fly.

A solo home run for Danny Zardon in the second inning added to the Joliet lead and Josh Merrigan went deep in the fourth inning, moving the score to 8-0.

The only offense for the ThunderBolts came in the fifth inning. Joliet starter Skylar Janisse had allowed only one hit through four innings but with two outs in the fifth, Riley Krane singled for his first professional hit. Keenyn Walker followed with a single of his own and both men scored on a Coco Johnson double.

The Slammers got those two runs right back as Bolin homered in the bottom of the inning. Meadows followed with a walk and later scored on a Silva single.

The Bolts could not mount a rally in the final four innings as they fell for the third straight day.

Janisse (3-0) pitched his best game of the year for the Slammers, allowing only two runs on five hits over seven innings for the win. Santiago, a rookie from Adelphi University, made it through 3.2 innings and allowed eight runs (seven earned) to take the loss.

The ThunderBolts and Slammers conclude their series on Sunday afternoon. Jake Fisher (2-3, 5.13) will get the start for the ThunderBolts against Joliet’s Duke von Schamann (1-4, 5.20). First pitch from Slammers Stadium is scheduled for 1:05 and the game will be broadcast through wcthunderbolts.com.
