Florence outlasts Bolts 9-5

Freedom 9 Bolts 5

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts and Florence Freedom sat through three weather delays before the Freedom came out on top for the second straight night, 9-5 at Standard Bank Stadium Wednesday night.

Florence (20-9) struck early with a Jordan Brower solo home run in the second inning. They made it 2-0 on Nate Ferrell’s RBI single in the third.

After two separate delays, totaling 44 minutes in the top of the third, Windy City (17-12) responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Keenyn Walker doubled and Tim Zier brought him home on a base hit.

Austin Wobrock’s two-run double in the fourth inning increased the Freedom lead and they ran it up to 5-1 when Ferrell singled and scored on an Andre Mercurio groundout.

The ThunderBolts once again fought back. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Andrew Dundon hit his second homer in three days, a solo shot. With two outs, Zier singled to keep the inning alive and Larry Balkwill followed with his fifth home run of the year, bringing the Bolts to within one.

Florence, though, put the game away with four late runs. They got an RBI single in the eighth from Collins Cuthrell and RBI hits from Cuthrell and Brower in the ninth to put the Freedom ahead 9-4.

Coco Johnson added one more run for Windy City in the ninth when he tripled and scored on an error.

Marty Anderson (3-1) allowed four runs in five innings and took the win. Robert Troiano suffered the defeat in his pro debut, allowing four runs in four innings.

The ThunderBolts look to avoid the sweep on Thursday night. Clay Chapman (0-3, 3.35) gets the start against Florence’s Cody Gray (4-1, 3.68). It will be a White Castle Wrestling Thursday featuring special guest WWE Hall of Famer “Mean Gene” Okerlund. First pitch from Standard Bank Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 and the game broadcast can be heard through on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
