Bolts drop opener in River City

Rascals 7 Bolts 2

O’FALLON, MO – The ThunderBolts scored a first-inning run but the River City Rascals responded with seven in a row to claim a 7-2 win over the Bolts at CarShield Field Friday night.

Four of the first five hitters reached base in the first inning for Windy City (16-9). They loaded the bases on three singles and Larry Balkwill drew a walk to bring home Keenyn Walker and make it a 1-0 game. Austin Warner pitched out of that jam without allowing another run and only allowed one more hit in his seven inning performance.

After Jake Fisher retired the first six batters he faced, River City (13-12) got on the board to tie the score in the third inning. Brandon Thomas reached on an infield single and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw. He scored on Clint Freeman’s sacrifice fly.

The Rascals moved ahead in the fourth as Josh Silver singled and scored on a Braxton Martinez double. Jimmy Kerrigan hit a two-run homer in the fifth to increase the lead to three.

A three-run rally in the sixth inning put the game away for River City. Thomas picked up a two-run single and Johnny Morales singled home one more to make the score 7-1.

The Bolts added one more run with two outs in the ninth. Kyle Wood hit a towering blast over the right field wall for his first home run of the year, cutting the final score to 7-2.

Warner (2-0) allowed one run in seven innings for the win and Fisher (2-1) was removed after four runs in five innings and took the loss.

The Bolts continue their 13-game road trip on Saturday with game two against the River City Rascals. Clay Chapman (0-2, 3.19) gets the start against River City’s Hector Hernandez (1-3, 4.08). First pitch from CarShield Field is scheduled for 6:35 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
