ThunderBolts even series with rout over Lake Erie

Bolts 7 Crushers 1

AVON, OH – The ThunderBolts scored six runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie with the Lake Erie Crushers and capture game two of the series 7-1 at Sprenger Stadium Tuesday night.

Jordan Dean hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Crushers (7-10) a 1-0 lead. The next two batters singled to put men at the corners with only one out but Zac Westcott struck out Sean Hurley and Connor Sullivan was caught stealing to end the threat.

Westcott did not allow a hit past the first inning.

Jordan Kurokawa retired the first nine batters he faced for Lake Erie but the ThunderBolts (11-6) got to him in the fourth. Keenyn Walker doubled and scored on a two-out Tim Zier single to tie it up.

The Bolts broke through in the sixth, taking their first lead of the series. Walker hit a leadoff triple and scored on a Coco Johnson base hit to make the score 2-1. Blair Beck singled and Zier walked to load the bases in front of David Kerian, who singled home two more runs. Larry Balkwill followed with a three-run homer, his second of the year, putting the Bolts ahead 7-1.

That was enough for the Windy City pitching staff as Westcott retired 13 straight batters after his trouble in the first. Westcott (3-0) ended up with the win, going seven innings and allowing three hits total while striking out five. Jake Stolley pitched a scoreless eighth in his season debut and Kevin Lenik struck out the final three batters in the ninth.

Kurokawa (1-1) took the loss as he gave up four of the seven runs over 5.1 innings.

The ThunderBolts and Crushers wrap up their series on Wednesday night with Brady Muller (2-1, 1.86) getting the game three start against Lake Erie’s Adam Quintana (2-1, 3.31). First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 and the game broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
