ThunderBolts drop fourth straight game

Crushers 4 Bolts 1

AVON, OH – In a game that featured only nine hits, but 18 combined walks and three hit batters, the ThunderBolts were unable to capitalize on late baserunners as they fell to the Lake Erie Crushers 4-1.

Lake Erie (37-43) got their first run on a first-inning error. A single and a walk put runners at first and second with two outs. An errant pickoff throw from Corey Bass allowed Robb Paller to score from second base.

The Crushers added three runs with two outs in the third. They had two men on base due to a walk and a hit batter and Sean Hurley hit a three-run home run to put the Crushers ahead 4-0.

The ThunderBolts (36-43) were held to just four hits in the game, but had several good scoring chances thanks to eight walks issued by Lake Erie pitchers and two hit batters. The Bolts loaded the bases on a single and two walks in the sixth but didn’t score. They loaded them again on three straight walks with no outs in the seventh but Manny Arciniega came up with back-to-back strikeouts to pitch out of the jam.

The Bolts got on the board in the ninth. Coco Johnson doubled and Tim Zier singled before a wild pitch brought home Johnson to end the shutout.

Juan Caballero (2-1) picked up the win, going six innings. He allowed two hits and five walks. Jayson Yano (0-1) took the loss in his pro debut. He allowed four runs (three earned) in four innings.

The ThunderBolts and Crushers wrap up their three-game series at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday. Kyle Von Ruden (1-3, 3.10) makes the start on the mound for the Bolts in game three against Lake Erie’s Connor Reed (2-1, 4.66). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 and the radio broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
