ThunderBolts notch walk-off win

Jacob Tanis

CRESTWOOD, IL – Jacob Tanis singled home Austin Gallagher with two outs in the ninth to give the ThunderBolts a 2-1 win over the Frontier Greys at Standard Bank Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

Both teams had trouble getting scoring opportunities early as the game remained scoreless through the first five innings. Zak Wasserman did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and his Greys counterpart, Max Duval gave up a leadoff single in the first but retired the next 12 batters.

The Greys (25-28) finally ended the stalemate in the top of the sixth when Shane Brown hit a leadoff single. He moved to second on a Julio Rodriguez base hit and to third when Brandon Tierney hit into a double play. Scott Carcaise’s two-out single made it 1-0.

The game was tied in the seventh when the ThunderBolts (20-34) broke through against reliever Brent Choban. Mike Torres drew a leadoff walk, advanced on a wild pitch and a groundout and scored from third on Max White’s RBI single.

Wasserman allowed just a run on six hits over six innings and was relieved by Cameron Giannini, who threw three hitless frames to keep the game tied.

Austin Gallagher began the bottom of the ninth and reached on an error. He was bunted to second and moved to third on a groundout. Tanis came up with two outs and fell behind 0-2 before blooping a single to left field, scoring Gallagher and giving his team a 2-1 win.

Giannini (4-0) earned the win and Nick McBride (2-2) took the loss, giving up the unearned run in 1.2 innings. Duval threw six two-hit innings but did not factor in the decision.

The ThunderBolts and Greys will play another morning game on Wednesday. Danny Jimenez (2-5, 3.31) will be on the mound for Windy City on Big Splash Day Part II at Standard Bank Stadium. The Greys will counter with Justin D’Alessandro (3-5, 3.11). First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 and the game broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
