ThunderBolts close first half with 2-1 win

Bolts 2 Bums 1

CRESTWOOD, IL – Coco Johnson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and the ThunderBolts went on to defeat the Traverse City Beach Bums 22-1 at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday evening.

Zak Wasserman started for the ThunderBolts (19-30) and faced the minimum through four innings as he held Traverse City (31-18) off the scoreboard. Ian MacDougall was just as good, allowing only two hit through four.

The Bolts broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Deitrich led off the inning with a double and scored when Marquis Riley followed with an RBI base hit.

Traverse City responded immediately with a run in the sixth. They loaded the bases with nobody out on a single and two walks. Alex Tomasovich ended Wasserman’s shutout but grounded into a double play, slowing the threat. Chris DeBoo came out of the bullpen and got Jose Vargas to ground out to end the inning.

Johnson led off the bottom of the sixth with his shot to left-center field, his fourth home run of the year.

The Beach Bums got a runner on base in each of the final three innings and twice got him to second base but could not come up with the tying run.

Wasserman allowed one run on four hits over 5.2 innings but did not factor in the decision. DeBoo (3-2) threw 1.1 hitless innings for the win. MacDougall (6-3) pitched seven innings and gave up two runs on six hits, suffering the loss. All-star Travis Tingle came out of the bullpen for just the second time year and pitched a scoreless ninth for his first career save.

The ThunderBolts will be out of action until Friday for the Frontier League all-star break. Tingle and Mike Torres will represent the Bolts on Wednesday night in the All-Star Game at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. The whole team will resume their schedule on Friday night at 7:05 against the Southern Illinois Miners at 7:05.
