Schaumburg scores nine late runs to beat Bolts 9-1

Boomers 9 Bolts 1

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Schaumburg Boomers scored nine runs over the final three innings to defeat the ThunderBolts 9-1 at Standard Bank Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The ThunderBolts got off to a good start, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Max White and Ryan Tufts each singled to put runners at first and second before Ransom LaLonde knocked White in on a base hit.

Through six innings, that was the only support Jake Fisher needed. Fisher gave up a single and a walk in the first before getting out of that inning on a double play. He went on to record 12 consecutive outs and did not allow another hit through the first six.

The Boomers bats came to life in the seventh when Justin Vasquez hit a leadoff single. He moved to third on Mark Nelson’s double and they both scored on a Tillman Pugh base hit. Pugh crossed the plate on Alexi Colon’s double that made it 3-1. After Fisher departed, Mike Valadez singled home Colon, putting Schaumburg up by three.

They put the game away in the ninth when Jason Kafka walked four batters and Ryan Tuntland hit a grand slam giving the Boomers the 9-1 final.

Eddie Cody (2-0) worked eight innings, allowing just a run on six hits for the win while Fisher (1-1) was credited with four runs allowed in 6.1 innings.

In all, the ThunderBolts and Boomers scored 30 combined runs in the series, 23 of which were tallied in the final three innings as Schaumburg took two of three games.

The ThunderBolts will hit the road for the first time on Friday as they begin a three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park. Austin Wright (1-0, 1.50) will be Windy City’s starter for game one against Traverse City’s Casey Delgado (0-1, 1.92). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 and the broadcast can be heard at wcthunderbolts.com.
