Schaumburg evens series, handing ThunderBolts 4-2 loss

Boomers 4 Bolts 2

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Schaumburg Boomers broke a late tie with two runs in the eighth inning, dealing the ThunderBolts a 4-2 loss at Standard Bank Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The loss ends Windy City’s three-game winning streak.

Schaumburg struck first off of Travis Tingle, coming up with back-to-back two-out RBI hits in the first inning. Ryan Tuntland’s bloop double scored Mike Schulze to make it 1-0 and Mark Nelson’s single on the next pitch doubled the lead, scoring Tuntland.

The pitchers owned the game after that point. Scott Plaza, making his first pro start, did not allow a run over his first six innings. After the first, Tingle gave up just three more hits through the end of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jacob Tanis reached on an error and moved to third on a Zach Stoner single. Ransom LaLonde walked to load the bases with one out and Ryan Deitrich tied the score with a two-run single.

The 2-2 tie lasted only into the eighth inning. Craig Massey led off with a single and stole second. Jordan Dean singled and stole as well, putting two men in scoring position for Justin Vasquez, whose third hit of the day was a two-run single to give the Boomers the 4-2 decision.

The Bolts had baserunners in each of the last two innings but did not score.

Hideyoshi Otake (1-0) earned the win despite blowing the save in the seventh and Tingle (0-2) allowed three runs in 7.1 innings for his second straight tough-luck loss. Brandon Bargas pitched the final two innings for his first career save.

The ThunderBolts and Boomers will square off in the series’ rubber match on Thursday morning for the second straight school day. Jake Fisher (1-0, 0.00) will start for Windy City against Schaumburg’s Eddie Cody (1-0, 0.00). First pitch is at 10:35 and the game broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
