Robinson's homer vaults Bolts to victory

Kyle Robinson

CRESTWOOD, IL – Kyle Robinson’s two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth gave the ThunderBolts their first lead of the night and a 6-5 win over the River City Rascals at Standard Bank Stadium Saturday night.

The Rascals took the lead just two batters into the game when Eric Williams singled and Johnny Morales doubled him in. Morales advanced to third on an error and scored on a Phil Wunderlich groundout.

The Bolts got a run in similar fashion in the second. Andrew Brauer singled and moved all the way to third when Steve Carrillo threw the ball away at first. Brauer scored on Jayce Ray’s groundout.

River City opened their lead up in the fourth. Will Block walked and Sean Borman was hit by a pitch and both men moved up on an errant pickoff throw. Carrillo doubled them home for a 4-1 lead. He scored on a Williams single.

The ThunderBolts got one back in the bottom of the fourth when Andrew Brauer doubled home Zach Aakhus, who had walked.

Aakhus and Brauer contributed again in the sixth inning. Cregar led off with a double before Aakhus walked. They both scored on Brauer’s third hit of the day, making the score 5-4 in favor of River City.

It was still 5-4 in the eighth when Aakhus was hit by a Nick Kennedy pitch with one out. Kennedy had not allowed a run since July 13, but that changed when Robinson hit his second homer in as many days, giving the Bolts a 6-5 lead and their fourth straight victory.

The win moved the Bolts to 40-40, the first time they have been at .500 this season.

Colin O’Connell (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win and Michael Click pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save. Kennedy (3-3) took the loss.

The ThunderBolts will go for the sweep of River City Sunday night. It is Standard Bank Family Day at Standard Bank Stadium as well as a baseball card set giveaway to the first 1,000 fans. Brian Oliver (4-7, 4.90) will start for the Bolts against Cory Caruso (2-2, 4.22) for the Rascals. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
