ThunderBolts Get Even With Bums

CRESTWOOD, IL—It was another double-digit hit performance from Windy City, but this time the ThunderBolts also led in the runs category against the Beach Bums.  A 9-6 win evened up the series between the ThunderBolts (18-27) and Traverse City (26-18) Saturday night at Standard Bank Stadium.

For the second straight night the ‘Bolts went on top in the 1st inning, but this time it was a 2-0 advantage.  With two on and one out, Ryan Soares recorded his first triple of the year to bring home Mike Torres and Zach Aakhus.

Traverse City earned one of those runs back in the 2nd when Marcus Nidiffer doubled in Chase Burch who led off the frame with a walk.

The ‘Bolts added more offense as they pieced together three consecutive singles, which  brought home Aakhus.   Andrew Brauer then sacrificed one more home with a fly ball to plate Soares.

After another run from Windy City the Bums didn’t score again until the 6th inning.  Back-to-back solo homeruns from Jose Vargas and Burch cut the ‘Bolts lead 5-3 and chased  Dyllon Nuernberg out of the game.

Windy City provided some power of its own as Jeff Harkensee recorded his first homerun of the year leading off the bottom of the 6th with a solo blast.  A bases-loaded double play from Torres brought across another run for Windy City before Aakhus singled in Miles Walding for the third run of the inning and a 8-3 lead for the home team.

The biggest threat from the Beach Bums came in the 8th inning.  With one on and one out, Tyler Claburn walked Zack Kometani.  One batter later Nidiffer reached on an error and on the play Carlo Testa came around to score.  Matt Howard then doubled in another run, and D’Marcus Ingram walked to load the bases.  Michael Click had to relieve Claburn and got Ryan Still to groundout, but allowed another run for the Bums.  Click struck out Taylor Wrenn to avoid any more damage.  It would cut Windy City’s lead to three, but that would be the final score of the game in a 9-6 decider.

Dyllon Nuernberg (3-1) earned the win while Kyle Teague (1-1) picked up his first professional loss.  Michael Click (9) earned the save in 1.2 innings.

The series decider will start with a 5:05 p.m. first pitch at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday evening.  Matt Wickswat (2-6, 5.15) will throw for the ThunderBolts against the Beach Bums' Jake Sabol (5-4, 2.69).  Fans that cannot make it to Standard Bank Stadium Family Day can listen to the broadcast on 88.3 FM WXAV and wxav.com
