ThunderBolts brave weather, win series

Bolts 3 Rascals 2

O’FALLON, MO – The Windy City ThunderBolts improved to 7-6 in one-run games as they won their third straight series with a 3-2 victory over the River City Rascals at T.R. Hughes Ballpark Sunday night.

After an hour and a half rain delay, the ThunderBolts scored first with three hits in the top of the first inning, all singles, from their first four batters. Evan Button led off with a base hit and later scored on Ryan Soares’s two-out single.

River City tied the score in the bottom of the second inning. They hit back-to-back doubles, but only had runners at second and third until Evan Crawford’s sacrifice fly scored Will Block to make it 1-1.

The Rascals took their first and only lead in the fourth inning. Block doubled for the second time and Jake Atwell doubled him in.

The Rascals finished with 12 hits, including six doubles, but they left 12 men on base and finished with just the two runs.

Windy City went on top for good in the top of the fifth inning. C.J. Gillman Doubled and scored on Button’s single, his third hit of the night. Button moved to second on an error and to third on a wild pitch and Zach Aakhus knocked him in on a groundout to put the Bolts in front 3-2.

Dyllon Nuernberg pitched out of jams with two on and one out in both the fifth and sixth innings and Daniel Cropper did the same in the seventh, both men preventing the Rascals from scoring.

Tyler Claburn pitched a scoreless ninth inning, earning his first career save.

Nuernberg (2-1) allowed ten hits in 6.1 innings, but only two runs as he picked up his second straight win. Casey Barnes allowed three runs in 6.1 innings, falling to 2-2 in the loss.

The ThunderBolts will take the day off Monday before resuming their six-game roadtrip against the Lake Erie Crushers at All Pro Freight Stadium on Tuesday. Game one of that series will feature Matt Wickswat (2-5, 4.93) pitching for the Bolts against Lake Erie’s Matt Rein (3-3, 2.45). Gametime is scheduled for 6:05 CDT and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
