Bolts ride big fifth to victory

JOLIET, IL— The Windy City ThunderBolts (5-13) provided some clutch two-out hitting in a 6-2 victory over the Joliet Slammers (7-10) Wednesday night.  The Bolts’ tied the series up at one game apiece as they continue on their six-game road trip. 

The Slammers struck first for the second straight day as Seth Schwindenhammer hit a solo homerun in the second inning putting Joliet on top 1-0.  ThunderBolts’ starter Daniel Cropper would not allow a hit after that. 

Windy City evened it up in the 3rd inning as they capitalized on a mistake by Slammers’ starter Chuck Lofgren.  Zack Aakhus reached second base on an error by Joliet’s pitcher and scored on a single by C.J. Gillman. 

The ThunderBolts finally were productive with two outs when they plated five runs in the 5th inning.  Aakhus led off the frame with a single and came around to score on Louie Templeton’s double.  After Miles Walding and Mike Torres helped load the bases, Doug Joyce lined a 1-2 pitch off the right field wall to clear the bases and put Windy City on top 5-1.  The Bolts’ scratched across one more in the inning when Andrew Brauer singled home Joyce.  

Joliet would not score again until the 7th inning against the ThunderBolts bullpen.  Michael Wing led off the inning by doubling off Tyler Claburn.  Despite the bases being loaded, Wing would not score until a sacrifice fly from Ben Hewett cutting the score to 6-2.  Michael Click also came in relief in the 7th and avoided another bases loaded jam by popping out Nate Wilder 

Cropper (1-1) earned the win in his second start for Windy City.  Lofgren (2-2) picked up the loss. 

The ThunderBolts will attempt to win their first series of the year as they take on the Slammers at 7:05 Thursday evening.  Travis Strong (0-2, 5.17) will make his fourth start for Windy City and will be opposed by Joliet’s Brett Zawacki (0-2, 5.14).
