Windy City splits doubleheader in Washington

WASHINGTON, PA – Blayne Weller threw his first career complete game and the ThunderBolts defeated the Washington Wild Things 3-2 in game one of a doubleheader Friday night. The Wild Things turned it into a split with a 6-1 game two victory.

Washington took an early lead in the first game, scoring two runs in the first. Andrew Heck had a bunt hit that scored Darian Sandford from second base and Jovan Rosa picked up an RBI on a double.

The Bolts fought back with a run in the second. With two outs, Zach Aakhus and Ryan Cuneo hit back-to-back doubles to make it 2-1.

Windy City took over in the fifth. Bob Glover singled and scored on Jareck West’s double. After West stole third, Chris Wade’s bunt single scored him to give the ThunderBolts a 3-2 lead.

Blayne Weller retired the last 11 batters he faced and only gave up one hit past the first inning. He struck out ten and improved to 5-2. Shawn Smith (1-4) took the loss, allowing three runs in 6.1 innings.

Windy City managed just four hits in the second half of the doubleheader.

They trailed early as Washington scored a run in each of the first four innings. Sandford’s sacrifice fly on the second pitch of the bottom of the first got the ball rolling for Washington.

The Bolts tied it in the second when Brandon Decker doubled and C.J. Gillman singled him in.

Gus Benusa singled in the bottom of the second and scored on a pair of ThunderBolt errors to reclaim the lead at 2-1. Mark Samuelson’s RBI double in the third and Shain Stoner’s solo home run in the fourth distanced the Things further, making it 4-1.

That was the score into the sixth, when the Wild Things were able to put it away on a two-run Jim Vahalik single.

Jhonny Montoya (2-3) allowed one run in five innings for the win and Andrew Chilcoat (2-1), in his first professional start, took the loss, lasting just 2.1 innings.

Game three of the four-game series will take place at CONSOL Energy Park on Saturday night at 6:05. Tyson Corley (4-6, 3.30) starts for the Bolts against Washington’s Justin Hall (4-7, 5.02). The game can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
