Washington charges late in 8-2 Bolts loss

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Washington Wild Things scored seven runs over the final two innings Tuesday night and defeated the ThunderBolts 8-2 at Standard Bank Stadium.
The Bolts had some scoring chances early, loading the bases with one out in the second and putting another at third with one out in the third, but in both situations, they were unable to get a run in.
Bryant Cotton for the Bolts and Justin Hall for the Wild Things were locked in a good pitchers duel, but the Things broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when Kevyn Feiner walked and, after a catcher’s interference call and a sacrifice bunt, scored on a Chris Sidick base hit.
The Bolts quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Chris Wade single and Mike Torres RBI double.
Cotton pitched seven strong innings, striking out a career-high 12 and allowing just the one run, but Windy City faced some trouble after he left.
The game remained tied into the eighth, when the Washington offense took flight. Scott Lawson led off with a double and was bunted to third. After an intentional walk issued to Estee Harris, The Wild Things got two runs on consecutive RBI groundouts hit by Feiner and Blake Ochoa.
Windy City had one more comeback in them as they scored a run in the bottom of the eighth on a Jason James bloop single and Devin Shepherd RBI double, but Shepherd was left standing on second and Washington ran away in the ninth.
Back-to-back singles began the inning and after consecutive walks issued by Brett Durand, The Bolts were down 4-2. After a wild pitch let another run in, Harris’ three-run homer sealed the win for Washington, 8-2.
Hall pitched 7.2 innings for the win (9-6) and Matt Costello took the loss out of the Bolts bullpen (3-6). Steven Grife picked up the save (2).
The same two teams will compete Wednesday night in game two of the series. The 7:05 start time at Standard Bank Stadium will feature Matt Jernstad (6-9) on the hill for Windy City against Jhonny Montoya (4-6) for the Wild Things. The game can be heard on Sportsjuice.com.
