ThunderBolts' lead disappears late in extra inning loss

BOX SCORE

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts fell one inning short of a 2-0 start as the Schaumburg Boomers scored a run in the ninth inning and two in the tenth to defeat the Bolts 3-1 at Ozinga Field Friday night.

Bren Spillane put the ThunderBolts (1-1) ahead early with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. It was Spillane’s second home run in as many nights.

Kenny Mathews took over from there. Despite allowing a leadoff single in each of the first three innings, Mathews was never seriously threatened. He kept his shutout alive into the sixth inning before departing after 5.2 with four strikeouts and four hits allowed.

The Bolts bullpen held Schaumburg (1-1) at bay over the next few innings but the offense struggled. They put runners at the corners in the third but didn’t get a runner into scoring position over the next six frames.

In the bottom of the ninth, Schaumburg put their leadoff man on base on a double that bounced off the first base bag. Gaige Howard came up with the RBI single to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, the Boomers scored twice on a Travis Holt single and a Chase Dawson sacrifice fly to take their first lead of the season. The Bolts loaded the bases on a pair of walks in the bottom of the frame but couldn’t score.

Kristina Scott (1-0) picked up the win in relief and Sebastian Selway (0-1) took the loss. Jake Joyce earned his first save.

The ThunderBolts wrap up their first series of the year on Saturday night. It’s Minecraft and Roblox Night at Ozinga Field with a postgame fireworks show scheduled. Austin Marozas makes the start for the Bolts against Schaumburg’s Miguel Reyes. First pitch from Crestwood is scheduled for 6:05 and the broadcast can be found through wcthunderbolts.com.
