Lake Erie handles the Bolts in their opener

Crushers 6 Bolts 4

AVON, OH – The ThunderBolts scored three late runs but could not overcome a five-run deficit as they dropped the opener of a three-game series to the Lake Erie Crushers 6-4 at Sprenger Stadium Friday night.

The ThunderBolts (0-2) scored the first run and took their first lead of the young season when Patrick Mathis singled in the second inning and scored on a Joe Becht base hit.

Lake Erie (1-0) answered with six straight runs. Jake Vieth’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second inning tied the score and they took the lead on a two-run Zach Racusin single in the third. They found more two-out magic in the fourth inning as Bodie Bryan picked up his first professional hit, driving in a run to extend the lead to 4-1.

That chased starter Kenny Mathews from the game. Mathews, making his Windy City debut, allowed four runs over four innings.

The Crushers tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth inning as Emmanuel Marrero hit a ball that was lost in the lights and turned into a triple. He scored on Bryan DeLaRosa’s single and DeLaRosa stole second and scored on back-to-back wild pitches to make the score 6-1.

The Bolts made it interesting when Becht walked and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh. They took more advantage of wildness in the eighth, loading the bases on an error and two hit batters before Brynn Martinez brought home a run on a single. David Oppenheim followed with a walk to force in another run, but the bases were left loaded, three of the 11 stranded runners in the game.

Alex Romero (1-0) pitched six innings for the win and Mathews (0-1) took the loss. Seth Lucio threw a scoreless ninth for the save.

The series continues on Saturday night as Christian Morris takes the mound for the first time for the ThunderBolts. Lake Erie counters with Greyfer Eregua. First pitch from Sprenger Stadium is set for 5:05 CDT and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
