Ninth inning rally not enough in loss to Joliet

Slammers 6 Bolts 5

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts scored three runs with two outs in the ninth inning but fell short in a 6-5 loss to the Joliet Slammers at Standard Bank Stadium Saturday night.

Joliet (29-24) manufactured a run in the first as London Lindley singled on the first pitch of the game. He stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout. Trey Fulton’s solo home run the following inning made it 2-0.

The ThunderBolts (19-33) got on the board in the bottom of the second on three straight hits. Riley Krane’s RBI double put runners at second and third with no outs but they did not score again in the inning.

Joliet got a run without a hit in the fifth. Travis Bolin was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on an error. He scored on a sacrifice fly. Fulton came up with a three-run homer the next inning to put the Slammers ahead 6-1.

After leaving four men in scoring position in the first six innings, the Bolts came to life in the eighth. Axel Johnson doubled and scored on a Tyler Straub single. In the ninth, with two outs, Omar Obregon kept the game alive with a single and Tim Zier’s two-run double cut the deficit in half. Johnson followed with an RBI single, putting the tying run on base but Isaac Sanchez got Straub to flyout for his second save in as many days.

Scot Hoffman (5-2) allowed one run in six innings and picked up the win. Jake Welch (4-3) allowed two earned runs in five innings for the loss.

The ThunderBolts look to avoid the three-game sweep on Sunday evening. Connor Bach (2-1, 4.57) gets the start for the Bolts against Joliet’s Shane Bryant (1-5, 5.14). Family Day at Standard Bank Stadium, presented by JULIE, will feature a petting zoo courtesy of Animal Quest – Chicago. First pitch is slated for 5:05 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
