Win streak ends in 10-1 Bolts loss

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Joliet Slammers scored seven runs in the seventh inning to distance themselves from Windy City as the ThunderBolts’ four game win streak came to an end in a 10-1 loss at Standard Bank Stadium Monday afternoon.

The Slammers scored early against Tyson Corley, who was making his first start in six years. Jimmy Waters and Brad Netzel hit back-to-back singles to lead off the game. Waters scored when Erik Lis reached on an error for the game’s first run.

Joliet added two more to make it 3-0 in the fourth. Abel Nieves reached on an error and Josh Lyon singled before Nieves scored on a Zach Mandelblatt groundout. Lyon crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Overall, Corley allowed three runs (one earned) in five innings.

Jim Schult got off to a great start for Joliet. He did not allow any runner past first base over the first six innings, preserving his team’s 3-0 lead into the seventh.

That’s when the game fell apart for Windy City. They used four pitchers to get through the inning, allowing seven runs on just two hits. There were seven walks, including six with the bases loaded, and a hit batter. Duke Dykeman finally got Hector Pellot to ground into a double play to end it.

The Bolts lone offensive spark came in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Chad Cregar singled and Jareck West was hit by a pitch in front of Brandon Decker, who singled home Cregar to break the shutout.

The Slammers allowed only one more hit the rest of the way and Schult (2-1) picked up the win, going seven innings. Corley (0-3) took the loss.

After a day off on Tuesday, the ThunderBolts will begin their longest road trip of the season. The nine-game journey begins on Wednesday evening at Labatt Park, where the Bolts will get their first look at the London Rippers. Mike Recchia (4-2, 3.50) will start game one for Windy City The game begins at 5:30 p.m. CDT and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
