ThunderBolts score late to take down Schaumburg

CRESTWOOD, IL – Jairus Richards hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and help carry the ThunderBolts to a 6-4 win over Schaumburg at Ozinga Field Tuesday night.

For the third time in their last four games, the ThunderBolts (9-8) took a multi-run deficit in the top of the first inning. Schaumburg (9-9) rapped out four hits and scored two runs to put the Bolts in a 2-0 hole.

Kenny Mathews settled down on the mound and didn’t allow another run. He lasted six innings.

The ThunderBolts got on the board and took the lead with a three-run fourth. Peyton Isaacson and Richards each hit an RBI double and Jack Strunc scored on an error to make the score 3-2.

The ThunderBolts added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Richards reached on an error, stole second, made it to third on a wild pitch and stole home when Rob Calabrese got himself in a rundown.

Schaumburg came back to tie the score with two runs in the eighth but the ThunderBolts immediately responded. With two outs, Isaacson and Strunc singled in front of Richards, who knocked home Isaacson with a hit. Calabrese followed with an RBI single that made the final score 6-4.

Kyle Johnson (1-0) blew the save but picked up the win in relief while Boomers reliever Kristian Scott allowed two runs to take the loss. Dylan Prohoroff pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.

The three-game series continues on Wednesday night, a special 6:05 start for Palos Baseball Organization Fireworks Night. It is also a military and senior appreciation day at Ozinga Field. Tom Jager will make his first career start for Windy City against Schaumburg’s Orlando Rodriguez. Fans not in attendance can fins audio and video broadcasts through wcthunderbolts.com.
