Bolts battered in series opener

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Washington Wild Things jumped out to an early lead and pulled away from the ThunderBolts in a 16-2 final at Ozinga Field Friday night.

Windy City starter Miguel Ausua opened well, retiring the first five batters he faced but the wheels fell off in the second inning. With two outs, the Wild Things (25-12) came up with back-to-back singles and Alex Alvarez followed with a three-run homer.

They matched that with three runs in the third and fourth innings to open a 9-0 lead.

The ThunderBolts (16-19) finally got the crowd into it in the bottom of the fourth when Dan Robinson rocketed a home run to right-center field, his second of the year.

That high moment was short-lived. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth, Washington resumed their rout, getting a two-run single from Wagner Lagrange.

The final run for the ThunderBolts came in the seventh as they loaded the bases on a walk, an error and a single and Joshuan Sandoval scored on a wild pitch. Washington followed with five runs over the final two innings to deliver the ThunderBolts their worst defeat of the season.

Sandro Cabrera (3-2), in his return from a two-week suspension, pitched six innings and allowed just a run, picking up the win. Miguel Ausua (1-2) allowed nine runs in four innings for the loss.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday night, Jimmy Buffet Night at Ozinga Field. Todd Donnelly Music will be performing a pregame concert at 4:15 with fireworks to follow the 6:05 contest. The first 500 fans through the gate will receive a free Hawaiian lei. The game broadcast will be available through wcthunderbolts.com.
