Early deficit dooms ThunderBolts in loss

Boomers 8 Bolts 5

SCHAUMBURG, IL – The ThunderBolts scored five runs in the ninth inning but were unable to overcome a big early deficit as they dropped the opener of a three-game series to the Schaumburg Boomers 8-5 at Boomers Stadium Friday night.

After the ThunderBolts (25-32) left five men on base over the first three innings, Schaumburg (30-27) got the scoring going with four runs in the bottom of the third.

They had two men on base with two outs when Matt Rose broke through with an RBI single. Nick Oddo followed with another run-scoring base hit and Jimmy Galusky made it a 4-0 game with a two-run double.

Schaumburg tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth, getting RBI singles from Chase Dawson and Oddo.

Their lead reached its pinnacle in the seventh inning when Clint Hardy followed a walk with a two-run homer, putting the Boomers ahead 8-0.

After the third, the Bolts were unable to figure out Schaumburg starter Matt Miller and didn’t put together another scoring threat until the ninth inning, when Tyler Alamo walked and Chase Cockrell doubled. Christian Funk walked to load the bases and Brett Coffel was issued four balls to bring home the Bolts’ first run. Tyler Straub walked to score another run and an Omar Obregon groundout brought home another.

The ThunderBolts’ final two runs came on back-to-back wild pitches, but that was where the rally ended as Erik Martinez got the final out to secure the win for the Boomers.

Miller (3-1) struck out ten over seven shutout innings and earned the win. The loss went to Sean LeLand, who gave up four runs on six hits over three innings.

Game two of the series will be played on Saturday evening as Kenny Mathews (2-6, 4.15) takes the mound for the ThunderBolts against Schaumburg’s Gunnar Kines (4-3, 2.81). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 CDT and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
