Bolts drop opener in Washington07/16/2019 8:14 PM
WASHINGTON, PA – After striking for a couple of early runs, the ThunderBolts saw the Washington Wild Things score five runs in the bottom of the second inning on their way to a 9-4 final at Wild Things Park Tuesday night. The Bolts (24-30) scored twice in the top of the second inning when Chase Cockrell was hit by a pitch and Micah Coffey doubled him in. They loaded the bases on a walk and another hit batter before an Omar Obregon RBI single doubled the lead. Washington (23-32) wrested the lead away as their first six batters in the bottom of the inning all reached base. JJ Fernandez, Cody Erickson and Saige Jenco each came up with RBI hits and an error and a sacrifice fly gave the Wild Things two more runs. The ThunderBolts weren’t done fighting as they put two more runs on the board in the fourth. Justin Smith walked and Tyler Straub hit a two-out, two-run homer, his first of the year, to make it 5-4. That was as close as they would get, though, as the Wild Things pulled away in the final four innings. Fernandez hit another RBI single in the fifth inning to make it a two-run game and they added three more runs in the seventh. Hector Roa’s third hit of the game was an RBI double and Erickson and Brett Marr followed with RBI singles. Carter Johnson (2-2) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Washington’s bullpen tossed 5.1 shutout frames overall. Cole Bellair (2-2) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) in five innings. The series continues with Chris Washington (1-5, 307) on the mound for the Bolts on Wednesday night. The Wild Things counter with Josh Lapiana (0-1, 5.08). First pitch from Wild Things Park is scheduled for 6:05 CDT and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com. |
